This is the season of giving, and there are multiple great organizations to which to donate. However, we’d like to impress upon you the need our team has for funding, what the funding goes towards, and most importantly why it is not just about the money.
The sport of power soccer is not cheap. It costs roughly $3,000 every season just for team registration and tournament registration costs. Because this isn’t just another school team sport, we are required to travel to where the tournaments are held resulting in a surmountable expense to our team members and their families to participate in each tournament. These families already have excessive medical bills, home renovation bills, and specialized equipment requirements to ensure they can live healthily with their severe disabilities. They often times don’t have the financial means to pay for weekend long trips in other cities and states to participate in tournaments. Our team would like to offset those costs for our families. It costs roughly $3,500 a season to help pay for travel expenses, and this does not include any air travel that may be required to attend Nationals which could be anywhere in the nation.
This sport requires specialized, adapted power wheelchairs in order to play. This means each player is required to have their everyday chair as well as their power soccer chair. Insurance will not cover sports wheelchairs because they are not considered a medical necessity. However, anyone who has kids involved in sports knows how sports can improve the self-esteem, confidence, and overall health of their child. This is the same for power soccer players! In order to be truly competitive in this sport, you must have a special Strike Force wheelchair made by Power Soccer Shop. These are the elite power soccer wheelchairs that surpass anything else currently on the market. The base price for one of these chairs is $7,900. Our families don’t have the funds to take care of their loved one’s medical needs as well as pay for a second chair out of pocket.
Our newest player, Colton Darst #12, is 7 years old and is currently using a borrowed, outdated wheelchair to play. He is in desperate need of a new chair in order to be competitive with the other team members. Without your support, we are unable to help him obtain such a chair, which will hold him back from reaching his greatest potential! We need your help to obtain better equipment for Colton. See the photos above to understand the difference between the chair Colton is currently using and the Strike Force chair like the one Jake has.
Each season, our out of pocket expenses are roughly $6,500 not including any potential flight costs for Nationals. One Strike Force wheelchair costs roughly $8,500 to order and ship. This is in no means an inexpensive sport. However, the Circle City Renegades are committed to trying to help reduce the cost on our families as much as possible. Please help us on our quest to help these families enjoy the same pleasure of rooting for their children and other family members that you experience with your able-bodied family members. Each person, regardless of disability, should be allowed to participate in team sports if they choose. The cost should not be the thing that keeps them from enjoying being part of a team, playing a sport they love, and socializing with others like them.
